California Giving Students iPads Instead of Textbooks…and Oregon?

California testing iPads as algebra textbooks

“Four of California’s largest school districts will be trying something new on eighth-grade algebra students this year: giving them iPads instead of textbooks. The devices come pre-loaded with a digital version of the text, allowing students to view teaching videos, receive homework assistance and input assignment all without picking up a pen or paper. If the students with iPads turn out to do improve at a faster pace than their peers as expected, the program could soon spread throughout the Golden State.”

Oregon Universities put iPad to test:

Griffin Huber, 18, Portland was among the 10 percent of George Fox University freshmen on Thursday who picked up a free iPad. The university gave freshmen a choice of the Apple iPad electronic tablet or MacBook laptop computer. Huber and most other students choosing the iPad said they already had laptops. Huber said he plans to use his iPad in connection with his studies in cinema and media. Technology experts say the iPad also serves as a powerful electronic book reader that may usher in the demise of paper textbooks.
