Sample Virtual High School Placement Exams

Choosing a Math or Language Arts Course

Math tests to help decided student readiness:

Grammar and Composition is a foundation Language Arts course. This test can help determine if Grammar and Composition is where a student should begin their Language Arts course of study:

Language Arts Level 1 Exam (Grammar and Composition)

Choosing Honors Courses

Honors Readiness Exam

Preparing to Take the Exams

It’s recommended a student should set aside at least one hour to complete an exam. Be sure the student is clear of distractions and has access to paper and pencils.

Taking the Exams

To the student: All questions should be attempted. Be sure to use the space provided to solve problems. The back of the exam sheet can also be used if needed. Write the answer in the proper location so when the exam is being graded, the answers are easy to find. Write clearly and accurately. Be sure to answer the questions completely and avoid answers containing more than one possibility. You should feel confident enough about your answer to clearly state it. If you absolutely get stuck on a question, leave the question blank.

Remember, the goal is to help students be placed in the correct course. If students do not do their own work, their results may not accurately reflect their placement level and potentially placed in a course they are not ready for.

Grading the Exams

Answer Keys:

Math Level 1 Answer Key

Math Level 2 Answer Key

Math Level 3 Answer Key

Language Arts Level 1 Answer Key

Honors Readiness Answer Key

All answers should be marked as “Correct” or “Incorrect”. One (“1″) point should be deducted for each incorrect answer. At the bottom of each page, record the total points awarded for that page.

When the exam grading is complete, add the scores from each page and write the total score in the top margin of the exam.

Using the Results of the Exams

Math and Language Arts:

Using the Math and Language Arts Results Table (PDF), locate the exam by name. Next, locate the score that was achieved on the exam. Corresponding to this score, you will find a recommended action plan.

The results may indicate the need to complete another Placement Exam. If so, choose the correct placement exam above and complete it as noted.

Once all appropriate exams have been completed, course selections can be made. Be sure to refer to the Results Table for additional suggestions for choosing courses.

Honors:

Using the Honors Results Table (PDF) locate the score that was achieved on the exam to find the recommended action plan

After choosing your courses, view our course catalog for course details.

Do your students ever have a heard time remembering what they have read? In this webinar, Reading Horizons Teacher Trainer, Jay Kelly, will discuss how working memory plays into student reading and how to help students increase their comprehension.

In this webinar educators will learn the answers to questions such as, “Have you ever had a student who could remember small details from a story but couldn’t recall larger, more-significant elements?” or “Have you ever had a student who understood instruction on Wednesday but on Thursday had virtually no recall of that instruction?” Teachers will also learn how to help students who understand a specific concept but who have significant difficulty connecting it to other related concepts. Teachers will learn the warning signs of working memory weakness and methods of instruction to help minimize the impact of those weaknesses.

This webinar will be presented by Jay Kelly who has over 17 years experience in teaching, writing and training. His current work focuses on training teachers to work with struggling readers, working one-on-one with reading students, and developing practical teaching strategies for struggling readers based on current neurological research. Jay holds an MA in Philosophy from the University of Oklahoma where his research centered around critical thinking processes, logic and philosophy of mind.

DynEd moves delivery of award-winning content to mobile devices

Burlingame, CA—December 12, 2011—DynEd International, Inc., a leader in the English language learning solutions market, has made it’s award winning content available for iOS
compatible devices (iPad and iPhone). With the goal of providing DynEd-partner studentseasier access to their courseware, DynEd for iPad allows existing students the flexibility to increase their study time on a platform that travels with them.

“By making DynEd for iPad a free download, DynEd has extended the classroom to devices that travel with students,” said Ian Adam, DynEd’s CEO, “encouraging frequent, shorter
study sessions that increase language cognitive retention and improve English adoption success.”

The new iOS 4.2.1 version of DynEd features an updated, intuitive graphic interface that takes advantage of Apple’s touch screen navigation. The app uses existing users’ id and
password, allowing current DynEd student ‘s courseware to be downloaded onto the device and study time and results synchronized into existing Record Manger files.

A key differentiator for DynEd solutions is the blended delivery model. By coupling interactive English language learning software, which engages the student and adapts to individual needs, with live coaching, DynEd improves English language proficiency efficiently and effectively. Coaches use student study records to customize and personalize interaction, making lessons more meaningful and language more memorable. This focused coaching helps reinforce English retention and accelerates language acquisition.

About DynEd International

DynEd is a privately held English language learning solutions company. A pioneer in blended language learning, DynEd is delivered exclusively with support from licensed institutional providers including private and public schools, universities, leading corporations, training organizations, and government agencies in more than 50
countries. With users now numbering in the millions, DynEd courseware has won over 40 awards.
