Adaptive Assessments
Adaptive Assessments are an excellent way to diagnose a student with an unknown academic history. Also, Adaptive Assessments are used quite often to
automatically provide instruction at the student’s level – either below grade level, on grade level, or above grade level.
Let’s create an Assignment List that includes an Adaptive Assessment which will automatically adjust to the student’s academic level across 2 skill levels beginning at the 5th grade level.
- Before we can add an Adaptive Assessment to an Assignment List, we need to Create an Assignment List. Click on the link for a step-by-step guide.
Adding an Adaptive Assessment
- Log into A+ as an Administrator or Teacher
- Click on the 3rd icon from the left, the Clipboard, which is also called the Assignment Management Window.
- Expand your school (clicking the key to the left of the folder)
- Expand the class you would like to add the Adaptive Assessment to.
- Expand the Default Lesson Plan
- Right Click on the Assignment List you would like to add the Adaptive Assessment
- Hover your cursor over Add Assignment and then select From Subjects to the right.
- In the upper right under Select an Activity Type, drop down the menu by selecting ALS Lessons.
- Select the second down from the top, Adaptive Assessment
- In the upper left under Select a Subject, drop down the menu by selecting Adaptive Assessments – Language Arts.
- Choose either of the top 3 choices: Language Arts, Science, or Mathematics.
In this case, we’re going to stick with our 5th grade Mathematics example.
- Select Adaptive Assessments – Mathematics
- Select Level 5 Assessment below
- Click on Selected Activities in the center of the screen under Add Assignments to Current List.
- Click OK since we do want the Adaptive Assessment to automatically prescribe lessons immediately after the test.
- Click OK to save it
- Click Close at the bottom of the screen
Since our example included our desire to allow the test to cross 2 skill levels, we need to now Edit Assignment Settings.
- Expand the Assignment List we just added the Adaptive Assessment to.
- Right Click on the Adaptive Assessment. In this example, it should read Level 5 Math Assessment.
- Select Edit Assignment Settings.
- If you would like to re-name the Assessment, highlight Level 5 Math Assessment, press Delete or Backspace on your keyboard, and re-name the Assessment to your liking. (For Example: Math Lessons, Math Review, General Math, Accelerated Math, etc)
- The bottom right of the screen reads Depth of ALS Skills Testing.
- Change the number to the depth of skills you would like to test. Any number greater than 2 creates a really lengthy test.
- Remember, this test will test ALL skills starting at the selected grade level and then will automatically “adapt” to the student’s performance of the test. The test will continue to “adapt” until it reaches its depth limit. To stay consistent with our example, the test would “adapt” 2 skill levels (or grade levels).
